In the wake of the Hirak (the 2019-2020 protests and social mobilisation), the Algerian power elite has turned to foreign policy both to restore Algeria’s place on the international stage and to contain the country’s social and political crisis. Considering foreign policy to be an effective means of legitimation, it has used it to try to dampen the population’s rage caused by the excesses of Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s four terms in office (1999-2019). In order to develop this policy, the current president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has launched the idea of a new Algeria, which presents itself to the world via a new foreign policy.
Key words: Algeria, power, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, foreign policy, legitimacy, Hirak
