“What’s going on in the world?” Six Months into the Israel-Hamas War: Are There Prospects for Peace Between Israel and Palestine?
Six months after the October 7 attack on Israel, what are the impacts in Israel and Palestine? Is it credible to discuss peace while calls for ceasefire in Gaza go unanswered? More importantly, what does a political solution in Israel and Palestine require?

Given its magnitude and devastating consequences, the ongoing Israel-Hamas war undeniably marks a turning point for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and for the entire region. Israel’s response to coordinated terrorist attacks by Hamas, which caused more than 1,100 deaths and the abduction of around 240 Israelis, has killed over 33,000 Palestinians, 70% of whom are women and children. Additionally, more than 85% of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been forcibly displaced from their homes and lands while the entire population is experiencing food insecurity at crisis levels or above.
In the West Bank, violence has reached to levels not seen since the Second Intifada, claiming the lives of more than 450 Palestinians. Furthermore, the feared regionalisation of the conflict has become a reality. The increasing clashes between the Israeli Defence Forces and Hezbollah can turn to a regional scale war while other emerging tension points in the Red Sea, Syria, Iraq and Jordan have drawn the United States and a few allies into confrontation with armed groups aligned with the “axis of resistance”.

In this session of the “What’s going on in the world?” series of conferences, Claudia Saba, adjunct professor of International Relations at Blanquerna-Ramon Llull University, Mariam Barghouti, policy analyst and journalist based in Ramallah, and Zaid Amali, public discourse and communication programme director at MIFTAH – The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, will analyse the impacts and prospects of the current conflict between Israel and Hamas. This session will be moderated by Moussa Bourekba, research fellow at CIDOB.
