The Russian Federation is the country that is the subject of the CIDOB International Yearbook 2010, a work of reference that also includes the customary chapters dedicated to an analysis of Spain's foreign policy, the international situation and Europe.
The year of 2009 was marked by a grave international economic and financial crisis, and this is precisely one of the main themes running through the various articles presented in the CIDOB Yearbook. Firstly, Michael Cox, Professor of International Relations at the LSE, gives a broad analysis of international policy and relations, focusing not only on the year 2009, but also on themes of argument that commenced with the end of the Cold War in 1989. Cox bases his analysis on the role of the US as the dominant power; the process of European construction, the evolution of Russia, the new emerging economies, the war on terrorism and the current economic crisis. The crisis is also the subject under study in the article by Renato Flôres, an academic from the Fundaçao Getulio Vargas in Brazil, who summarises the international economic situation as well as analysing the mechanisms of world governance at the political level.
In this edition, the task of analysing Spain's foreign policy falls to Günther Maihold, Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). Thus for the first time, the Yearbook offers an outsider’s point of view on Spain's actions at an international level. Maihold examines Spain's external actions toward the US, the EU and the Mediterranean, South America, Asia and other scenarios of national interest. Meanwhile, the evolution of the process of European integration in 2009 is examined by Werner Weidenfeld, Director of the Center for Applied Policy Research, who calls for a “Europe à la carte” model that can provide flexibility and innovation for a more capable Europe.
Finally, the section "Country profile: Russian Federation" presents three articles. Firstly, Andrei Makarychev, from the Nizhny Novgorod Academy of Public Administration, presents an exhaustive analysis of Russia, covering both the internal and the external dimensions. Meanwhile, the diplomat Manuel del Cámara and Alexander Gusev from theNizhny Novgorod University offer two differing views on relations between Madrid and Moscow.
The Yearbook also presents articles by José Luís Escrivá and Mónica Correa, Stefani Weiss and Nicolás Verón. As every year, the CIDOB International Yearbook provides a systematic monitoring of the international panorama and of Spain's foreign policy. The articles are accompanied by a large number of documental appendices that help the reader to monitor the international political situation in 2009.
