CIDOB leads the think tanks of southern Europe, being ranked 36th of 176 in the Top Think Tanks in the World category of the 2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report. CIDOB also consolidates 4th position in the Think Tank to Watch category, which recognises innovation and research excellence, while holding onto 8th place in the Best Independent Think Tanks list.

The 2019 edition of the Global Go To Think Tank IndexReport, which evaluates the world’s leading research centres every year, has named CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) among the world’s top think tanks, awarding it 36th place of the 176 centres that qualify in this category. In the ranking without US centres, it takes 30th place out of 158. For the fourth consecutive year, and in recognition of its independence of thought, CIDOB remains in 8th place (of 144) in the list of the Best Independent Think Tanks and consolidates fourth place of 112 in Think Tank to Watch, thanks to the innovation and excellence of its research.

For the first time, CIDOB was listed in the category of Best Policy Study-Report Produced by a Think Tank for The MENA Region in the Global Order: Actors, Contentious Issues and Integration Dynamics, published as part of the H2020 MENARA Project led by CIDOB and IAI. In other categories, CIDOB consolidated its position among the Top Think Tanks in Western Europe (12 of 141) and gained greater recognition among the institutions with the Best Think Tank Network (55 out of 86) and Top Foreign Policy and International Affairs Think Tanks (64 of 156).

CIDOB’s Director, Pol Morillas, said that “these results reward CIDOB’s commitment to excellence, innovation, relevance and independence in its analysis”. “The recognition comes at a particularly important time for the institution, with the recent approval of a new CIDOB Master Plan (2019–2021) and the launch of CIDOB’s Scientific Committee, formed of leading experts from the international relations field and responsible for advising, evaluating and supporting the quality of the institution’s research”.

This year’s edition named the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (USA) the 2019 Think Tank of the Year. It was followed in the ranking of the 176 Top Think Tanks Worldwide by Bruegel (Belgium), the French Institute of International Relations (France) and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (USA).

The Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, led by Dr James G. McGann, Professor of International Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP), has been ranking the world’s leading think tanks since 2006. It seeks to identify centres of excellence in different areas of public policy research in every region of the world. It is the leading international index assessing the work and impact of think tanks and is the result of an open nomination process followed by review by an expert panel.

The 2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report is officially presented today in Washington and simultaneously in 130 cities and 85 countries around the world.
