Debate session “What to expect from the European elections?”
In this session, Xavier Prats-Monné, Anna Buj, Péter Krekó, Xosé M. Núñez Seixas, Pol Morillas and Cèlia Cernadas discuss the challenges posed by the upcoming European elections and reflect on the impact of the results on the European project.

The next elections to the European Parliament will take place from June 6 to 9, 2024. More than 350 million people are expected to participate in these elections, which represent the largest transnational elections in the world. This exceptional event is also fraught with challenges that are currently straining the Union. The expansion of extremist right-wing parties across the continent has reinforced a skeptical discourse towards Europe, which tends to national withdrawal while rejecting the ideals of solidarity and universality that are at the origin of the European construction. After the elections, a new institutional cycle will be inaugurated that will determine the capacity to respond to the geopolitical, security, green transition and technological challenges that will define the future of the Union.
How do we build the European citizenship of the coming decades? How do we ensure that Europe remains one of the great democratic projects of the 21st century? How should the Union adapt to the transformations and new needs of today’s world? Anna Buj, journalist correspondent for La Vanguardia and RAC1 in Italy, and Xavier Prats-Monné, expert in European affairs and former Director of Education and Culture of the European Commission, will talk with Pol Morillas, Director of the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB). Péter Krekó, social psychologist and political scientist expert in disinformation, and Xosé Manoel Núñez Seixas, PhD in Contemporary History at the University of Santiago de Compostela, talk with the journalist Cèlia Cernadas.
These debates, organized by the CIDOB and the CCCB, put the spotlight on elections that could change the future of Europe.
