“In my opinion, the recent wave of protests in Kazakhstan is not only related to the land privatization issue but to a wider social unrest due to the worsening economic situation. The historical fear of Chinese colonization is combined with the perception of having a Government more concerned with their own business than the welfare of the average citizens”, says Nicolás de Pedro, researcher at CIDOB.
