Francis Ghilès, Associate Senior Researcher at CIDOB, analyses how the different EU countries are positioned in relation to the potential role of Algeria in their future energy security: “Spanish companies cannot offer the same level of technical know-how in exploration, building of LNG plants and laying underwater pipelines as their Italian counterparts can,” he argued. “Germany has a reputation for being reliable in Algeria, going back to tractor and motor plants it built back in the 1970s,” Ghiles noted. “As tectonic plates in energy move, it might be the right time for Germany and Algeria to restart a conversation on gas and renewable energy,” he suggested.
